Bunted on the buses
Jill Munro has a poem featured on a Brighton & Hove Bus. Her poem Bunted was commended in the Brighton & Hove poetry competition. As a result, it’s now up on bus 310 (the Dame Millicent Fawcett), running on routes 5 and 5A in Brighton. Bunted The red, white and blue of the flagging bunting draped around the sign Danehill left, Chelwood Gate right should have been removed now it’s three full weeks into June. You say I’d have thought they’d have unbunted that by now and I laugh, say I love you because you have your own language, and you say But isn’t that a word? and I say it should be – like the sagging It’s a boy! helium baby caught on a branch like Christmas fairy lights still twinkling come February, like yesterday’s damp confetti blowing around a yew’s roots, like deflated balloons on the party-house’s gatepost, like the fading sign for the festival we danced at last summer, like the wilted yellow chrysanths bunched with a ribbon on her grave, all those things so long past need to be unbunted. Meanwhile, one of our France-based members, Roger West, is doing a show next week in Göttingen, Germany. Coincidentally, he’s also in discussions about putting on the same show in Wiesbaden, which is twinned with Tunbridge Wells!

The biography of a song. A long poem about the French chanteuse, Barbara, a contemporary of Juliette Greco and Edith Piaf, and her iconic song ‘Göttingen’ – a song about the cultural resistance against the far right. Written and performed by Roger West with electronic soundscapes and live music from the duo Helma. Performed in the city of Göttingen in the garden of the Brothers Grimm – in the actual spot where Barbara wrote the song. Songs in French, text in a German version.
